Moving Along
| Things here have been what we would now consider, amazingly slow. Tehehe. And that's a nice change. Sissy is doing super well. She is finally starting to look alive again. It's sooo nice! The kiddos are fantastic. Kolby went fishing with grandpa Walter yesterday. He caught 13 catfish while Walter only caught 3! He will tell you though, the best part of the entire trip was Walter catching a soft shelled turtle and it biting him on the toe! *grins* Last night we had a BBQ over here at our place for the family. Walter went out and bought a bunch of fireworks for the kids and for the first time ever, I attempted to not only make just one, but two of my grandmother's recipes. One was her delicious, but highly fattening, butter rolls. The other was her 3 musketeer homemade ice cream. A little about me. I'm a by the book kind of gal a lot of the times. So, if you give me a recipe, I'm going to follow it to the letter until I get it right....then I might add in some of my own special touches....but NOT with grandma's butter rolls. If it doesn't say that I need "ice cream salt", I'm not going to use it! Tehehehe. Oh, and when making the sauce for the butter rolls, it would have been slightly beneficial if someone would have written in how to handle the tricky part of getting the flour to mix in more easily. I laughed because I remembered fondly calling up my great grandmother years ago to ask her about a recipe that she had given me to try. I remember looking at it to make my grocery list and immediately picking up the phone to find out measurements. All of the ingredients were listed, but no measurements. She sounded confused that I was asking and gave me replies such as, "just a dash or a pinch or a handful." "YOUR hand or MY hand", I asked! Needless to say, that attempt didn't work out so well. So, the very next time I was in town, I made her show me what all of those "measurements" really meant. I'm still not super clear, but at least I have an idea now! Tehehehe. Regardless, it all came out tasting really good. My sauce wasn't quite thick enough and it took the ice cream machine forever until mom realized that I didn't have the ice cream salt in there, but still scrumptious. I had this idea of doing the BBQ at the very last minute. Then I had this other fantastic idea of using all of my grandma's recipes. Unfortunately, there really wasn't time for that......so instead, I think I am going to do it for the Sunday dinner that we would be celebrating her birthday. I miss my grandma's cooking. I miss my grandma. Both of them. A lot. I think that would be a nice thing. Perhaps I should start practicing it now though? Anywho, we had a lot of fun last night with everyone. Growing up, Independence Day was only second to Christmas in regard to my favorite days of the year. I miss the way that it use to be too. See, growing up, we all went to grandma and grandpa's house. We would swim and pig out on all of the delicious food. Watch the fireworks and then pig out on home made ice cream and watermelon. All of our family, friends and neighbors would be there. Clint and pops and Tommy would all be there with their guitars, playing music and singing the night away. To me, that was always one of the most magical nights of the year. Why do people stop doing things that they have done for years and years? Right, I keep getting off track. Nostalgia I suppose. Jeff, Kolby and Benny all left for the park a bit ago. I'm certain that they are all having a blast. Jeff was off work yesterday and today too! YAY! He got several hours in out at the flying field yesterday and hopefully will get lots more in today. NATS is creeping up on us quick! I can't believe that we leave just next week! ARGH! Where did the freaking summer go? And a big surprise for those of you that have bothered to read this much babbling! We will be going to visit everyone in Oregon in August. The last week of August to be exact and staying through the holiday weekend so that he can go fly in a contest with his dad. YAY! And with that, I'm outta here! Our love to you all! |
